Sandy Smith, Chair
Sandy received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Behavioral Science from UMPI and a Master’s Degree in Counselor Education from the University of Maine. Previously, Sandy worked as a licensed social worker for several years prior to becoming a guidance counselor. She currently has 12 years of experience as a guidance counselor and is employed at Scarborough High School in southern Maine. She is pleased to have been a board member of Carleton Project since its inception .

Lynwood L. McHatten
With A BSE from UMPI, and a Master’s of Education in Guidance and Counseling from UMO, Mr. McHatten has been teaching in and around Ashland for over 40 years. In addition to his work with Aroostook County schools, he has also been very active in Ashland Community School athletics, and in 2009 was inducted into the Maine Sports Legends Hall of Fame. Len has been on the Carleton Board of Directors since the inception of the school. He also sits on the Northwood Manor Board and is a Maine Community Foundation Advisor.
Jerry T. White, Secretary and Treasurer
Currently Superintendent of MSAD 31, Jerry has been an active Superintendent for over 26 years. Recipient of Maine’s Superintendent of the Year 1989, he has been at the forefront of school technologies (receiving Maine’s first technology innovation grant in 1986). In addition he was also a founding member of the ECO2000 School, an interdisciplinary, multi-district, award-winning cyber school.
In 2003, Jerry was selected among an elite group from across the country to receive the AASA/Apple President’s Technology Award, recognizing superintendents who have demonstrated leadership in technological innovation.

Alan Morris
Founder of Carleton Project, Alan Morris has been teaching and advocating for alternative education practices for over thirty years.
Alan currently teaches at the Houlton location, and is principal for all Carleton Project schools.
Jennifer Walker, Clerk
Jennifer Walker has been with Carleton Project since 2007. Jennifer moved to Maine in 2001 from Central Florida where she worked in Marketing and Sales for Triad Marketing Group. Since then, Jennifer has graduated with her Bachelors Degree in Mental Health and Human Services, graduating from the University of Maine at Augusta, Magna Cum Laude.
Jennifer brings not only a wealth of practical and hands on experience managing the business side of Carleton Project but in addition, working with and advocating for students and families. “The best part of my job is having the diversity to work in so many areas of this school. One day it’s with students, the next it’s staff, most days a bit of both and then sprinkle in every corporate detail you can think of! Never a dull moment!” Jennifer would not be able to do what she does without the full support and love from her husband two beautiful children–Madison and Ethan.
Kim-Anne Perkins
With a BA in Oncology Social Work from Simmons College, and a MSW from Eastern Washington University, Kim-Anne Perkins has made an impressive mark for herself in Northern Maine. Currently a professor of Social Work at University of Maine’s Presque Isle Campus, she is also the Chair for the Center of University Programs at UMPI.
In addition to her University responsibilities, Kim-Anne is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, working with individuals and families, is clinical consultant for Aroostook Counseling and Evaluation services, and is an active member of the Commission on Curriculum and Educational Innovation. Kim-Anne is a valuable resource for Carleton Project, opening many doors to the University and providing countless opportunities for Carleton students to engage in authentic campus experiences.
Theresa Long
Theresa is our parent member of the Board. A parent of a 2006 graduate of the Houlton-area Carleton Project, she is currently a full time student and expecting to graduate with a BS in Mental Health and Human Services in December 2010.
Teresa and her husband currently reside in Houlton, have owned their own business for over fourteen years, and have two grown children.
